meet sensei anthony

Sensei Anthony has dedicated over 20 years to training in Chito-Ryu karate, beginning his journey under Sensei Adam Higgins at the Gold Coast Karate and Kobudo Centre. He is currently ranked Nidan (2nd Degree Black Belt) in Chito-Ryu Karate, holds the internationally recognised teaching qualification of Jun-Shidoin, and is also a Shodan in Chito-Ryu Kobujyutsu (traditional weapons).

Over the years, karate has taken him around the world — training and competing in Japan, Canada, Hong Kong, Norway, and beyond. He has proudly represented Australia at the last six Chito-Ryu World Championships (known as the Soke Cup), and achieved significant success at these events, with more then 10 medals, including three gold. He has achieved podium success at the international level in all three individual disciplines of Chito-Ryu Karate: Kata (forms), Kumite (sparring), and Kobujyutsu (weapons). His experience on the world stage means he knows exactly what it takes to perform at the highest level — knowledge and insight that he now passes on to his students to help them achieve their very best.

While competition has been a rewarding part of his journey, Sensei Anthony’s true focus has always been on self-improvement, personal growth, and helping the next generation of karateka achieve their potential.

The greater chito-ryu community

One of the great things about training at BrisKarate is knowing you are a part of a much larger Chito-Ryu karate community. Here in Queensland, we have strong ties with large dojos on the Gold Coast (Gold Coast Karate and Kobudo Centre, under Shihan Adam Higgins) and Sunshine Coast (Sunshine Coast Karate, under Renshi Martin Phillips and Renshi Sandra Phillips), where hundreds of students of all ages are training and growing together. This connection means our students regularly get the chance to take part in local tournaments, training days, and camps — building friendships, confidence, and experiences that go beyond their own dojo. We also welcome guest instructors from other dojos, giving our students the opportunity to learn from a wide range of highly experienced, internationally recognised elite teachers.

Nationally, the Australian Honbu Dojo (National Headquarters) is known as The Karate Institute and is found in Sydney. It is led by Michael Noonan Kyoshi, one of the highest-ranked Chito-Ryu karateka in the world outside of Japan. Internationally, our instructors, including Sensei Anthony, continue to travel to the Sohonbu (World Headquarters) in Kumamoto, Japan, ensuring that what we teach here in Brisbane remains authentic, inspiring, and deeply connected to the roots of Chito-Ryu karate.

With more than 10 years of teaching experience, both at the local dojo level and as part of the Australian team, Sensei Anthony brings passion and energy to every class. His teaching style is high-energy, challenging, and inspiring — designed to develop not only strong technique and fitness, but also the values of respect, focus, and resilience. Families appreciate his ability to connect with students of all ages, helping them grow in confidence both inside and outside the dojo. He is also Blue Card certified, giving parents peace of mind that their children are in the best possible care.

Outside of karate, Sensei Anthony is an avid sports, travel and photography enthusiast. He particularly enjoys golf, cricket, Australian Rules football, and snow skiing, and has a lifelong love of exploring new places and cultures. He is also a keen photographer, and often enjoys combining these interests - as evidenced by the photos of him practicing his karate in any number of weird and wonderful places around the world, from the deserts of Africa, to the beaches of Asia, and the snow capped mountains of Europe and the America’s.

Through it all, his guiding belief remains simple: karate is about becoming better than you were yesterday — and helping others discover the same joy in their own journey.

When you or your child train at BrisKarate, you’re not just joining a local dojo — you’re becoming part of a supportive, thriving community that stretches across Queensland, Australia, and the world. It’s a journey of growth, connection, and tradition — and it all begins with one step.
